Costa – Lister Gate

This visit felt like closing a circle, it was where Kerry and I went for an early date and holds a special place to us. I had a decaf latte and Sicilian lemon muffin, Kerry had an Americano and a caramel shortbread.

it was quite busy but loads of staff so not too long to wait, always a good thing. Sat upstairs and Kerry noticed that they have made it smaller, which is a shame, it used to feel spacious and airy, feels a bit more constrained now, but guess there are business reasons for the shrinkage.

The drinks were good, as always, the one thing with Costa is the consistency of the product. My muffin was really nice, the cake was nice and soft, the lemon curd inside was lovely, the cake a little dull once the lemon had gone but a good balance. Kerry’s caramel shortbread was nice, only issue was the caramel was soft but the biscuit and chocolate hard, so when trying to cut it there was a bit of a mess!

Could have done with staff checking tables a little more often as nearly every one had things left on it and just an unloved feel.

It’s closing for refurbishment shortly, not sure I will still be in Nottingham when it is finished but hope it is done quickly as will be interested to see Costa 2.0.

Hungry Pumpkin – High Pavement

This trip was made with niece rather than girlfriend, and could well be one of my last Nottingham coffee experiences, if so a delightful way to end. I have walked past the place many times, always meaning to go in, but it always felt the wrong time, it is in a nice area, but not one I’d pass at a time I wanted a break.

I had a decaf latte whilst Alice had a normal latte, we both opted for a bakewell slice too, ridiculously cheap – less than £8! And you get a small biscuit with drinks too.

The coffee’s were really nice, Alice is a professional tea drinker so to opt for a latte was a surprise, but she enjoyed it nonetheless. Mine was very nice, smooth and creamy, no sugar needed.

The bakewell slices were very nice, it was very difficult but I ate mine as slowly as I could to savour it for as long as I could. Clearly made on site and that day, very soft with the perfect ration of jam to cake to almond in my humble opinion.

It is not the biggest place, but big enough, and with a nice view of the church and friendly staff. Even when the only people there it didn’t feel empty or odd, like some places do with no other patrons.
